Wear your mother’s wardrobe, Tina Charisma advises.

Tina herself was not wearing her mother’s wardrobe at the Sustainable Fashion panel at London Met – but for sure she was rocking a vintage look.

The Ghanaian, London-based writer and TED speaker is a finalist of Miss Universe Great Britain 2017. Her work during the pageant competition was to empower women that were victims of acid attacks.

“That’s when I realized that it wasn’t only people that suffered from an acid attack that needed a boost in their confidence,” she said. “I was trying to find practical ways to help people rather than just giving a talk.”

All about action

She described the thought behind her organization, the ‘Charisma Campaign’ as being about action. The NGO campaign works to influence and empower change through culture, advocacy, and sustainable solutions globally.

Her background in International Relations and Sociology, which she studied at Keele University, formed her current cultural actions. She also studied in Sweden for a while and did her master’s degree at City University.

Tina campaigns, writes, and speaks on issues related to women, culture, environment, beauty, and education. Her work started in the media sector and expanded to charity work, inspiring women around the world to embrace their diversity.

The aim of the organization is to promote sustainability in the whole of culture which includes fashion: “We encourage people to think sustainably in every area of life,” she said.

How we access fashion

She highlighted that sustainability in fashion is different, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. “It is not about sustainability any longer, now it’s about how it can be accessed.”

Tina mentioned sustainable brands can be expensive at times. She added, “It is a gradual process (being sustainable), and that is ok. There is a big difference between being conscious and not understanding the purpose of it… sustainability is a trend.”
