Young people in Islington say that voting is more important than ever in light of London Voter Registration Week.

They called on the Government today to address issues that they are facing.

Elizabeth Mejia-Bedoya, 19, cafe worker, said: “Our generation needs to have more say about issues like mental health, the benefits of the youth, and how the Government is able to sustain us and support us in dark times.

“I don’t see the news addressing anything about student tuition fees and how they’re going to help students that are living in accommodation.”

London Voter Registration Week is a campaign by the Greater London Authority in and the London Voter Registration Strategic Partnership that aims to encourage Londoners to vote.

Hannah Shelley, 25, library employee, said: “I guess every vote does make a difference in a small way, probably not as much of a difference as you’d hope though. I sometimes feel a little bit disengaged from it because I voted in all the general elections and it’s never gone the way I wanted.

“I think it just makes you feel a bit disheartened.”

FE News reported in 2021 that less than three quarters of young people were registered to vote.
