What’s New in the Newsroom: What We’re Watching

By Cydneii Lung’aho

Somehow 2025 has flown by and we’re already in April. Uni is coming to an end and bank holidays are around the corner. The sun is peeking out and spring officially underway. So, of course, the itch to hang out with friends and go out and about is stronger than ever.

But, after a day out shopping or a quick dinner catch up, what better way to unwind or keep the night going with some of the new shows and films out now?

I asked our newsroom what they’re watching across the different platforms to give you the perfect movie night pick or rainy day binge:

Starting off strong with an expert, our film editor Maria Pedrosa’s latest watch, Charade (1963), is great for dinner and a movie. “One of the greatest Audrey Hepburn films, her chemistry with Cary Grant is breathtaking,” Maria says.

“The film follows Regina Lampert (Hepburn) as she finds herself followed by three men who are linked to the death of her husband, Charles. She seeks help from a particularly charming stranger named Peter (Grant) but gets stuck in a web of lies.

“This film has a great amount of suspense, amazing comedy all throughout and a great plot twist. It feels like a Hitchcock film, though it’s not. An entertaining watch, it is a classic for a reason. Definitely recommend!”

On the topic of thrillers, our subeditor Molly Madden’s latest watch Yellowjackets may be for you. The show is about a girls soccer team that survives a plane crash and has to deal with the repercussions of their own psyches.

Molly says: “The show follows the lives of the girls at the time of the crash in the ’90s and the present day survivors still reeling from the trauma of their teens. It is super intense and grotesque however I find it impossible to look away. There is also a perfect touch of humour to balance out the thrill.”

Similarly, one of my recent watches, The Residence, is a new Netflix original by Shonda Rhimes with the perfect mix of drama, comedy, mystery, and thrill. The show follows detective Cordelia Cupp as she investigates a mysterious death in the White House on the night of a State Dinner.

For all my Knives Out or Death on the Nile lovers, this is for you! Either solo or during a hangout, The Residence is one hundred percent binge worthy with a perfect amount of wit, and will have you and your friends on the edge of your seats.

My other recent watch, 1883, is the prequel to the infamous Yellowstone and also on Netflix. The show follows the Dutton Family as they trek through pre-settled America fighting off nature, bandits, and the unknown to find their home.

I started watching after my mum couldn’t stop raving about it and, like my mum, I was hooked and finished the show in a week! Gripping and beautifully written, the show is the kind that once you start, you just can’t stop.

Good thing though, since Yellowstone has five more seasons to binge on Netflix, alongside its newest prequel, 1923, available on Paramount+.

Speaking of infamous, our beauty editor Melina Gjoka’s recent rewatch, One Tree Hill, is definitely one of my essential comfort shows. A drama series, the show focuses on the lives of two half-brothers, who have a complicated relationship, exploring their friendships, family issues, love lives, and personal struggles as they grow up.

Set in a small town, the characters face many challenges while trying to figure out who they are and what they want in life. Melina says: “Watching One Tree Hill can feel like stepping back into a simpler time. It’s a series that you can watch over and over again when you need a little escape or just a reminder that everyone has their own battles to face.”

A lovely way to unwind after a long day, there’s nothing like a comfort show, or a good reality show. Our photo editor Daniella Forresu and our crime reporter Maria Segura both love a good reality show!

Maria says: “The Spanish TV show, Survivors, is hilarious and fun. It shows famous people living on an island where they compete against one another for a cash prize. Inspired by the Italian version, viral celebrities Montoya and Anita from Temptation Island are now on the show, adding to the show’s fame. It comes on three days a week and is the perfect way to end a long day.”

Similarly, Daniella’s been watching Big Brother, the popular show where a group of people thrown into a house together for several months, looking to be the last in the house to win a cash prize. Though it just finished last night, the show is definitely binge worthy! That, along with Temptation Island Italy, have been helping Daniella unwind.

Daniella says: “Similar to Love Island, the show is about single people living together on an island, looking to become couples. The drama makes it funny and gives me a good laugh at the end of the day.”

Staying on the reality TV track, our Culture Editor Kim Tran has been keeping up with the new Netflix show, Inside.

Kim says: “It’s a show made by the Sidemen with 10 celebrities and influencers locked inside a house for a week without their phones. They have to try not to spend any money, as there’s a money pot of one million pounds, whilst taking on challenges and temptations for them to save or spend money. The last ones standing can either split or steal the remaining money!”

Certainly different than the other reality TV we’ve mentioned, Kim says: “It’s quite interesting so far and watching them all go insane from boredom.”

Last but not least, our Fashion Editor Aliyah Rahma has just the thing for action and anime lovers. Her recent watch, Sakamoto Days, is an ongoing series available on Netflix every Saturday.

Aliyah says: “It’s about the greatest hitman of all time who retires after getting married and runs a convenience store. One day, he receives a bounty on him and has to catch up with his past after leaving it for years. It’s an anime adapted from a manga with the same name by Yoto Suzuki. The anime is very lighthearted but also packed with action, it’s also funny and will make you laugh by.”

Some honourable mentions of good shows and movies around the room included:

  • Adolescence on Netflix
  • Yellowstone on Netflix
  • Abbott Elementary on Disney+
  • I’m Still Here available in cinemas
  • Shameless on Netflix
  • Temptation Island USA on Netflix
  • We Live in Time available in cinemas
