The relaxing of mask-wearing in the UK had given some people hope that the pandemic is going to soon be over. But while Covid-19 cases are starting to decline, some people are worried that there is no real end in sight.
The latest update by the Government has confused people. While some are happy that mask-wearing will no longer be mandatory in most public places by this Thursday, others are rebelling. People with anxiety were badly affected by this loosening of restrictions, believing that the mental health of the most vulnerable was not taken into account by decision-makers.
University student Dana Ashraf, 20, from India, said: “There is still a pandemic going on. He [Boris Johnson] shouldn’t off taking away all the restrictions. Because he is acting like everything is over – but people are still dying.”

The government said: “People wear face coverings in enclosed or private spaces, but this will be a personal judgement.”
The latest rules for face coverings and masks from Thursday 27 January,
- “face masks will no longer be required in secondary school classrooms, and won’t be required in communal areas
- “face coverings will not be legally required in any setting
- “the government “recommends” that people wear face coverings in enclosed or private spaces, but this will be a personal judgement
- “however, London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed masks will remain mandatory on all TfL services including the Tube
- “some retailers including Sainsburys have asked staff and customers to continue wearing a face covering”

People who don’t think masks are necessary are optimistic about the government’s steps.
Nick Gard, 24, from Essex, said: “These masks are uncomfortable. I think it is not necessary because it is making Covid like a cult. It is not like it was at the beginning. You don’t need to constantly be reminded about Covid, you need to move on with your life and forget about it.”

The loosening of rules left a question mark in people’s minds. Isn’t it enough that hundreds of thousands of people have already died from Covid – shouldn’t we keep wearing those masks?
After all, if we wait for Covid to disappear completely, how will we know we won’t be waiting forever?
