Smashbox Cosmetics and freelance makeup artist Ria Clark reveals her thoughts, tips and tricks on the Valentine’s makeup industry.

With the season of love looming, it’s time to think about what those lucky in love want to do with their makeup. Whether a hot dinner date or a wine-tasting evening, Valentine’s day is the perfect time to dress up and maximise the makeup. But what is the best way to get your glam on this February?

Ria Clark believes that there are a few handy tips to follow when prepping your makeup look. “I would try to avoid doing a bold lip with a bold eye, so if you are doing a red lip do minimal eye makeup… you want to balance it out.”

Clark’s favourite product to use is setting spray. “If you spend ages getting ready to go out for Valentine’s you don’t want it to slide off your face by the end of the night, so a setting spray is a life saver.”

In terms of Valentine’s trends, the makeup artist says that there are certain staples that always seem to pop up again each year, she says. “A red lip and a winged eyeliner is always a classic… [although] I’ve been finding that pink smoky eyes are getting popular too.” Could you rock this pretty look?

It seems that makeup is a big topic for the important events of the year, with sales rising the most at Christmas and New Year, closely followed by Valentine’s Day. Clark explained the reason for these sales spikes, saying: “Makeup companies definitely use holidays… to boost sales and bring out new collections… sales increase as we get a lot of men coming instore to buy their partners presents.”

The season is busy for makeup artists as well, with a higher demand for bookings than the rest of the year. When working with clients, Clark says that when she is doing a Valentine’s look, she sticks by red as a traditional colour but advises not to go too over the top. “If you wear a red lip don’t wear a red outfit or red accessories.”

However, Clark believes that the most important thing when doing your makeup is to “do your makeup how you feel comfortable because that’s when you will look your best”. In short, have fun with your makeup and you’re set to have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
