Remembering those that perished: Holocaust Memorial Day 2018

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) is commemorating its 17th year of bringing the event to the UK on Saturday, 27th January.

While the Holocaust is part of a past that would undoubtedly be undone if it was possible, it is important to remember that it did in fact happen. Remembering this tragedy serves as a mark of respect to the heroes and survivors, who have the most incredible stories to tell.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember those who were lost to genocide and are reminded that such events should never occur again. The HMDT charity was established in 2005 and continues to support and promote Holocaust Memorial Day each year.

The charity creates free resources, workshops and local and national HMD events for all to be involved in. The trust also highlights the stories of survivors of the Holocaust, sharing inspirational memories of those growing up during the German persecutions of approximately six million Jews.

HMD 2017 saw over 200 Holocaust and genocide survivors, along with a few famous faces including Jim Broadbent and Timothy West coming together to commemorate the Holocaust.

Local Holloway resident Jasmin Pierce, 33, admin assistant, said: “It’s obviously really sad but remembering people is really important. Everyone knows someone that has been affected in some way or shape.”

“I didn’t know there was a big ceremony about it but I’m definitely interested in it now,” said another Holloway local, Hawwa Keenan, 24, retail assistant.

Krzystof David, 27, labourer, said he feels especially passionate about the cause due to his Jewish faith. “It’s a part of history people need to know about, [especially] if like me it’s part of your heritage.”

HMD events will be taking place across the UK on Saturday the 27th January. To find out what’s going on near you and to get involved visit the www.hmd.org.uk website.
