Filler addiction: getting that Insta look

Do Instagram’s filters make you consider fillers? Maybe it’s the Instagram influencers you follow who have flawless skin and bodies?

Whatever the reason, the filters work really effectively – as evidenced by the fact that the popularity of fillers and injections is continually growing.

Nanny Eva Sinele, 24, is one of the young women that social media encouraged to make the first step into the filler world. “Before I decided to get any fillers, I saw a lot of ads on Instagram and Facebook that made me want to change something to myself,” said Sinele.

So far, she had six injections in four different parts of her body – lips, chin, lower stomach and vitamin injections.

“I am addicted to fillers and injections because it makes me look better and make me feel more confident about myself however it is pretty expensive and can be very painful,” Sinele said. “But everyone knows that beauty costs pain.”

Not everyone gets influenced by social media to get injections. Some people felt motivated to get fillers before social media took the world by storm.

”I know all these internet girls put filters on their photos,” said Malgorzata Nowicka, 32, who had several fillers, mainly in her lips.

Since she was young she had a complex about her lips, she said: “Before the social media craze even began, I didn’t like my small lips and uneven lower lip, so I decided to have fillers for that. It was like a dream come true.” Even wearing masks during the pandemic doesn’t stop her from getting her lips done, she said.

According to SaveFace, in a survey done on Snapchat, more than half of sixty thousand participants answered that they view getting fillers and injection procedures much as they would getting a haircut or a manicure.

In the same survey, sixty-six per cent answered that they would like to get non-surgical cosmetic surgery done.

Shapol Aram, a dentist at Canada Water Dental Health, said: ”Fillers and Botox will always be popular for people in 20s to 40s but I see threads are increasing in popularity for over 40s. “

Aram advises the first-timers to start listing and avoid doing multiple parts of the face in one go and don’t overuse as the face can appear heavy.

Since 2015, when Kylie Jenner confessed to her lip fillers and botox, her popularity increased by 70 per cent among young girls. When Jenner stepped out with poutier lips, Dr Leah Totton of Dr Leah Clinics told the Independent newspaper that her clinic had seen a 70 per cent increase in lip filler enquiries.
