The Great Escape, organised by the Islington Cycling Club, is already sold out – the cycling event will be happening on the 15th of May.
“It’s sold out every year in advance of the start date,” said David Shannon, the Islington Cycling Club Secretary and Organiser of The Great Escape.
The event started in 2014 with 200 participants. The following year the Club was able to get insurance for 400 people.
“It is more for adults, 200 km is quite undertaking,” said Shannon. “I will not recommend it to junior cyclist unless they are over elite level.”
Low technology race
Participants have to pay £7 to £9 to enter this challenge – it starts and finishes in central London near Old Street and it has few stops with checkpoints along the way. Shannon advises that participants should be 20 years or older if they aim to complete the course.
“It’s kind of low technology, you just take a route sheet out,” Shannon added. There is also a GPS route available.
“The other big thing about the ride is the beautiful route that takes in little lanes and pretty villages in Essex,” said Shannon.
It is a friendly event with no competition – Shannon added: “Is not a race it is a challenge.”

The club is also organising a 100km ride to Little Chalfont called The Italian Job from Finsbury Park on 12 June.
