All Arsenal have to show for their dismal season is one contender for the 2016 Professional Footballers’ Awards (PFA) Team of the Year. A season which was touted for Premier League glory and even FA cup success has been reduced to a mere top four season.
The decline for this great club has been a continuing cycle for the past couple of years. The defender, Hector Bellerin, does put some shine on the club. With the £42.5 million transfer of Mesut Ozil and £35 million transfer of Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal, this would suggest that the team would go to bigger heights. Unfortunately this hasn’t spurred the team to anything but two FA cup triumphs . For many supporters this is not enough for a club this big.
“I have supported Arsenal since the days of George Graham and personally seen the cup triumphs and league championships,” said 35-year-old Arsenal fan Kenny Davidson.“The players today don’t know how to win trophies and handle the pressure of success.”
Looking at this Arsenal squad it appears that the majority of them will still be at the club next season. They should have a good look at Leicester City players this season. They have shown that real community spirit and unity is key to their impending league championship. Also the fact that most of their players don’t earn more than £50,000 a week shows some modesty, whereas the average Arsenal player earns £68,000 a week.
“Wilshire, Welbeck and others get over £80,000 a week for doing nothing and we still don’t have a trophy winning mentality,” said 28-year-old Arsenal fan Adedamola Bakinson. “We need to get rid of this mentality. The team of the year shows how bad we are with just one player included.”
If this year’s PFA awards shows the football community anything, it’s that history doesn’t entitle special treatment. For all the trophy successes and brilliant football played, Arsenal could only muster one player in the team of the year.
