An estimated 60 percent of the English population is considered physically active in all kind of sports here in the UK.
Winter is coming to an end, which is why locals and residents like to do certain activities to cope with the cold. But this is momentary until the weather starts to bring more sunshine to the capital.
According to the NHS website, doing any type of physical exercise or activity for adults between 19 – 64 years old can be beneficial to reduce serious cardiovascular diseases or strokes in the future.
At least in London 64.2 percent of residents and citizens are considered active while exercising twice a week and more than 150 minutes a day, which is the recommended time by the Chief Medical Officer.

For Patricia Miñaca, 47, a Haringey resident and full time waitress worker at Obica Restaurant at Oxford Circus, said: ‘’During winter I opt to just go for a walk here at Finsbury Park for two hours and a half while listening to music, because I prefer this type of of outdoors activity that doesn’t require me to do much effort for the season.’’
Generally, people prefer to go for a walk at parks in winter for the reason that it is very calm, silent and not crowded as in summer. In relation to the Vantage Fit blog, winter walks are beneficial for health in adults to help them burn calories and blood flowing thanks to the cold breeze of the air.
Furthermore, an equally important motive for them is that there are no bugs to disturb them during their sport activities, while on summer this is a strong obstacle for them.
For Angie Arias, 21, a resident at Finsbury Park and a full-time international student at University of Westminster, commented that: ‘’ Depending on me and my sister’s mood to be honest. There are yoga classes that I registered online to participate with her.’’
For summer
During the summer, recreational activities in the parks are slightly different than in winter due to the weather that prevents locals from staying indoors for long periods of time.
‘’For summer my sports activities change more, in this case I like to ride my bicycle while listening to music at least for one hour. If it is not that I go for a walk with my dog,’’ Arias said.
Summer sunshine is one of the main reasons why residents of Finsbury Park decide to go to the park and enjoy the activities there.
‘’For the warm season, my activities vary a bit more. That period of time I look for fresh options, such as going for a swim. But here in the park there are sports organisations that I subscribe to play tennis or stretch exercising in groups,’’ Patricia added.
There is no doubt that activities during these two periods of time differ from one to another. Certainly there are plenty of leisure outdoors activities, mostly for summer; however, winter is a perfect season to stay at home or go for a walk to warm the body up in the cold.
The Haringey Council website offers sports events, activities and group classes for the residents every month to enjoy parks and green spaces in North London.
