Say “hello” to ’90s beauty trends again

By Agnese Ratniece

That cosy feeling of nostalgia when you see a trend that used to be popular in your early school days is coming back. Was it brown, glossy lips or sky blue eyeshadow? It is exciting to see that something that used to be cool is cool again.

Jaz Crush, 26, a makeup artist who was named one of the best in London by Glamour, said: “People are becoming more experimental with bright shadows and ‘high blush’ which certainly speaks of the ’80s. I have noticed that the flawless matte complexion of the ’90s is making a comeback.

“Another ’90s trend that has been back for a while and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere is more of a sculpted matte brown eye!”

“I absolutely LOVE the ’90s supermodel look! Makeup Artists like Kevyn Aucoin made this type of look famous!” said Crush.

The ’90s supermodel look is brown eyeshadow with black eye pencil, brown blush and lips lined with brown lip liner and finished with lighter brown lipstick.

Desislava Atanasova (Desi), 25, another makeup artist, said: “Beauty trends that coming back are very dark lip liner with a light shade of lipstick or just a gloss on top, blue eyeliner or pastel blue eyeshadows, face-framing hair and the bouncy blowdry.”

“This makes me happy because these trends make people experiment with new makeup looks, and it just breaks the routine,” said Desi. “Fashion is always one step forward, and they inspire me a lot with the trends. There is a reason why fashion and makeup work so well.”

According to whowhatwear, high glare lips, embellished complexions, frosted lids, molten eye shadow formulas, retro-inspired matte skin, camouflaged contour and monochromatic mauves are other trends that are going to be popular this year.

“Beauty and fashion circulate so quickly that it rapidly becomes brought into mainstream consumption, and then everyone is doing it! Often at that point, it becomes modernised to a certain extent, and then it almost feels like it was never a trend from a decade ago but instead part of our everyday,” said Crush.

“At some point, someone with influence will decide us time to bring another vintage trend back and before you know it the cycle begins again.”

Trends are coming back every twenty years or so because of generational changes, according to the DSN English report on trends. We get inspired by our parents when looking at their old photos and want to recreate their looks because it’s something different.

“When I look at my mum’s pictures and I see her clothes, I become so inspired by them, and I always ask her how did you dress like that,” said Desi.

“I love to see that trends are coming back and people from different generations are having something in common. It makes people so much more polite and interested in fashion and makeup. I think it just makes the world more colourful and more interesting.”
