Man under the influence crashes car into traffic lights

Highbury Magistrates Court

A man has appeared in front of Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with drink driving and possession of drugs.

Delroy Sterling, 30, from Sittingbourne Kent, appeared before the Magistrates’ Court after a motor related offence, which allegedly occurred in March 2018.

The prosecution told the court that Mr Sterling had hit a traffic light pole with a car.

The prosecution said that on exiting the car, Sterling smelt strongly of alcohol and was over the legal limit for driving a car.

When the vehicle was searched, the police allegedly found cannabis, MDMA and cocaine, all of which are illegal drugs under UK law.

The defence explained that the defendant had suffered from stress, as a result of a decline in work as a painter and decorator. The defence said that “it’s a domino effect…  one thing leads to another… he has a family and four children to support”.

The Magistrate said that she would need to take instruction from the probation officer before she could sentence Sterling.

The case was adjourned until the defendant could meet with his probation officer, and the court clerk said that the case would be concluded at a later date.
