Makeup giant Becca Cosmetics is saying goodbye after 20 years

by Eleonora Zorzenone

The best selling brand Becca, hailed by many influencers and celebrities, has been hit heavily by Covid and has announced that it will sadly go out of business.

Early in the week, the Becca Cosmetics’ team announced that the brand will officially shut down in September, 2021.

They shared the sad decision in an Instagram post where they said: “An accumulation of challenges, together with the global impact of COVID-19, has sadly been more than our business can withstand.”

The post continued with a positive message to all loyal customers: “We believe in you, and we believe that the beauty inside you is the light you share with the world. We are confident that the spirit of BECCA will continue to live on through all of you.”

Becca Cosmetics is a very popular brand. Originating in 2001 in Perth, Australia, it became famous worldwide when Estee Lauder Companies bought the brand in 2016.

Since then it has become extremely popular, especially on social media, thanks to best selling collaborations with influencers Jaclyn Hill, Chrissy Teigen, and Khloe Kardashian.

Many of Becca’s products, like the under-eye brightening correctors, the brightening primers, and the hydra-mist powder, were extremely successful – but Becca’s holy grail was the highlighter. The Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter is with no doubt the brand’s most successful product. In 2017, it started the trend of blinding highlighters, and soon many other makeup brands decided to follow the trend and launched highlighters.

The influencer Molly Tarlov commented on the brand’s post : “Thank you Becca for teaching us all how to use highlighter.” The award-winning celebrity makeup artist Sahur Saleim said: “I will never forget the impact that BECCA had on our makeup routines and had us all glowing.”

We all know that Covid has negatively impacted lots of businesses around the world. The beauty industry has both suffered and thrived during the pandemic.

According to a business report from McKinsey & Company about the changes that Covid brought to the world of beauty, while skincare, hair care, and bath and body products reported a boom in sales, makeup suffered a 55% decline in purchasing compared to the previous year. Lockdown and wearing masks have pushed people away from wearing makeup.

Becca Cosmetics might be leaving us this September but we still have time to stock up on our favourite products.
