With all nightclubs and music venues shut down in the UK, DJs and music artists have been making the most of 21st-century technology live streaming. Markets Insider reported that confinement has led to a 24% increase in viewership on Twitch, a popular live-streaming network.
And it isn’t only ‘bedroom DJs’ who are making the most of the free streaming service to reach out to their followers.
Beatport, an online music store, recently broadcasted a 34-hour live stream which included performances from some of the biggest artists in electronic music, including Carl Cox and Rüfüs Du Sol. The broadcast raised $180,000 for coronavirus relief – donations from the millions of viewers.
But smaller artists have seen this as an opportunity to grow their following during lockdown in the hopes of success post-coronavirus.
Thais Cunha is a techno DJ from Brazil, currently living in London. She presents a bi-weekly live stream on Function.Fm. “The intention is to explore the many faces of electronic music that you play here in London.
“Since the lockdown, the site has seen a big increase in followers and people watching the show. I guess with more time on our hands it’s the perfect time for DJ’s to perfect their craft!”

Newcastle singer L Devine recently performed for her fans at here ‘URL Tour’, following cancellation of her tour due to the novel coronavirus.
She announced on twitter “Sooooo I have been thinking about what to do now I’m not on tour with @findingfletcher and… I’M GOING ON TOUR. A URL TOUR. I thought it would be cool to do something virtual that we can all be a part of Hope to see you at a show lol” She streamed each day on a different streaming service including Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.
