Some UK citizens have resorted to stockpiling food because they fear that the import of foods from the EU will stop coming to the UK due to Brexit, resulting in shortages.
Members of the public have started to panic, and have started to stock up on large quantities of non-perishable food items at home, so as not to lack essential food when the time comes.
“My friend’s Mum has a large walk in ‘Brexit cupboard’; she has been squirrelling essentials away for the past year or so, medical supplies as well as long life food stuffs etc,” wrote a woman who called herself “Scooter58” on Gransnet.
Locally, smaller shops on the Holloway Road had very little to sell, let alone for people buy in large quantities. Although shop assistants said today that they had heard of stockpiling, they hadn’t seen stocking up.
“I have heard the news but have not seen anyone buying food in bulk or in large quantities,” said the manager of Tesco Metro near London Metropolitan University, who gave his name only as Eddie.
The BBC has quoted a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesman saying: “The UK has a high level of food security built upon a diverse range of sources, including strong domestic production and imports from other countries.
“This will continue to be the case whether we leave the EU with or without a deal.”
Emergencyfoodstorage.co.uk is advertising a “Brexit box to start your Brexit stockpile”. Inside the box, which is decorated with British and European Union flags, are “60 servings of main meals + 48 portions of meats + water filter + firestarter”.
Most of the shopkeepers in the local area said they have heard about stockpiling but have not actually seen it happen. But “kittylester” told the mumsnet forum she thought it was all a joke. “I bought a six-pack of tinned chopped tomatoes the other day – does that count?” she asked. “They were on offer!”
