Cold weather affecting local businesses

Street sellers on Holloway Road are already feeling the negative effects of the winter season, especially as the cold snap is affecting their businesses.

Last year Britain faced one of the coldest winters in history, when the Siberian wintry conditions in Britain reached -1.

Weather forecasts have predicted that another cold beast is on its way to Britain in the next few days, and street sellers on Holloway Road have said this will lead their businesses into big losses during this cold period.

“When it gets really cold at this time of the year like we experienced last year my business is affected as people would rather have their keys cut in an indoor shop rather than an outdoor shop like mine,” said Abdul Omar, who runs a key cutting shop on Holloway Road.

“I had to close my shop for two days last year during the winter because it was not worth it to keep it open.”

Keeping warm in winter is difficult for most people, even if you are wearing warm clothing.

Andy Carson, a greengrocer on Holloway Road who opens at 8am said: “It’s a major challenge to keep warm when it starts freezing. As you can see I have thick layers on but I am freezing right now and worse off no one wants to stop by to buy anything because the weather is freezing and irritating.

“People are just rushing to get to the office all home and there is nothing more I can do.”

Working outdoors in winter like a banksman on a construction site requires wearing the right clothes. Dress the part but avoid cotton. Windproof jackets protect your body from a variety of weather conditions, from wind to rain. And don’t forget warm, waterproof shoes.
