A man was charged with racially aggravated and assault on a police officer at a BP Petrol station, after he was approached by the police for acting drunk and disorderly.
The court was told that Jahrell Warren, 26, from north London, was approached by the two officers and immediately started filming them on his phone.
The officers were able to smell the alcohol on his breath as he came up to them, and he was also showing signs of being heavily intoxicated and was said to be “sweating profusely” by the officers.
The court was told through the statement of the officers that Mr. Warren became more aggressive as he approached them, stating: “I’m a hard man, are you only stopping me for brownie points.”
He went on further to direct his anger towards the one officer who was Black by saying he was a “Black sheep” amongst other officers, then proceeded to refer to him using a racial slur.
Spitting at the police
Matters were heightened when the court was told Mr. Warren spat on the officer´s forehead. The officer stated that he “would rather have been punched” than spat on by the man and being subjected to racial abuse.
As the incident took place in 2022 when there were Covid precautions in place, this was taken into account with the charge of spitting at the officer.
The court was told that the officer was distressed by the language used towards him and he stated that he is proud to be a Black man and a police officer, and that in no way should he be targeted to abuse for this.
Warren pleaded guilty on all charges and stated that excessive alcohol was a catalyst to making the decisions that led to his charges.
He has been charged on two offences; firstly on a racial offence charge under The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and a further charge of assault of the police officer under the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018.
On account of his charges, he is on a 12-month suspended sentence and must attends RA (Rehabilitation Activities) days. If he fails to comply, the sentencing for 16 weeks in jail for each charge will apply.
