Yesterday, King Charles held his first Commonwealth speech at Westminster Abbey. “Tolerance, respect and solidarity” is what the King was trying to convey at the speech, whilst also placing a strong emphasis on diversity.

He included words from representatives from the Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Christian communities, as well as a performance from dancers in Rwanda, according to the BBC, in order to make his speech appeal to as many of his subjects as possible.

“She was a very dutiful person”

Queen Elizabeth was the figurehead of Britain for many generations, with people growing up and being used to seeing her everywhere. Now that she is gone, Charles has to take the throne and become the new leader of Great Britain.

Along with touching on diversity, King Charles talked in detail about his mum. He said that the Queen loved the Commonwealth, to which she devoted her entire life.

“Commonwealth Day was an occasion of particular pride for my beloved Mother, the late Queen — a treasured opportunity to celebrate our Commonwealth family, to whose service she dedicated her long and remarkable life,” he said.

“In succeeding Her Majesty as Head of the Commonwealth, I draw great strength from her example, together with all that I have learnt from the extraordinary people I have met, throughout the Commonwealth, over so many years.”

But what do the people of Holloway think?

Although the speech received wide praise, not everyone was impressed.

Robin Taylor, 46, local teacher, had this to say: “She was respected as a monarch, however because of Prince Charles’s affair with Camilla, the people have lost respect.”

Sandra Beccarell, 54, artist said, “It’s going to be difficult for Charles to replace the Queen as the Queen was on the throne for so long, and I think a Queen is much different to a king.”

Tsveta Dimitrova, 25, student says “I don’t think Charles can replace the Queen, as they are not similar and do not have the same qualities.”

So it is evident that the public of Holloway do not think King Charles can replace the Queen effectively, this is due to his controversial past, as well as not sharing the same qualities the Queen had.

It will be interesting to see whether the public grow to like Charles, or continue to not feel confident with his capability on the throne.
