The formulation of cosmetic products using farmed ingredients is what we classify as organic beauty. It should be prepared and cultivated without pesticides, genetically modified organisms, parabens, chemical fertilizers, or antibiotics. Organic beauty products should also be certified by one of the organic associations to make sure that they use 97% of organic ingredients.

In recent years, more and more brands have entered the beauty world. Due to big competition, many brands lowered the prices and lowered production prices to stay relevant. They choose quantity over quality.

On the other side, organic beauty is more expensive. It is more pricey due to organic crops growing more slowly, and the fact that growing plants without chemicals requiring more work. Then there is the higher cost of fertilizer for organic ingredients, along with many other reasons.

Why choose organic beauty products over synthetic ones?

During the past years, more and more people started to care about the ingredients in beauty products and what they put on their skin. Organic beauty is free of harmful ingredients like parabens and is safer for sensitive skin. Also, it is more planet-friendly because the products are vegan and more sustainable.

Made Rae, 26, is clean beauty and wellness blogger who also and works on Beautycounter, a US direct to consumer company that sells skin care and cosmetic products. “Unfortunately the common products (beauty and personal care) found on shelves today contain hundreds of toxic ingredients that have been found to be detrimental to human health,” says the organic beauty enthusiast from New Hampshire.

“Everything from cancer-causing carcinogens, to endocrine disruptors, skin irritants, and allergens, to things that can potentially affect our reproductive systems, respiratory systems, nervous systems, liver, and more, can be found in products.”

“Organic means working with nature, not against it”

At the moment, the demand for organic beauty products is high. As per Statista Consumer Goods & FMCG statistics, the global market value for organic beauty in 2020 was $US40.2 billion, and is growing every year. More and more organic beauty brands are coming into the market, which means today consumers can choose from a variety of brands.

In an interview with Daisy from the PrettyGreenTea, Wendy Sterling, founder of the organic beauty brand Botanicals, said: “Botanicals is continuing to grow so hopefully more of the same, with increased numbers benefiting from using authentic, natural and organic skincare.

“Botanicals products are made in a very different way to commercially produced skin care products and this is reflected in the results they achieve. For instance, all Botanicals’ products are made fresh, in small batches, to preserve their active botanical properties.”

Their processing methods also ensure that the “vital life-force of the plant isn’t destroyed by heating or over-processing”, she added. “I strongly believe mass production would be detrimental to the quality of the product we offer, which people love and respect and which we have built our name and reputation.”

Due to a big demand for organic products, many brands start to follow the trend. In 2018 Superdrug announced that brands like Bleach London, Eco Tools and B. Cosmetics are turning more eco friendly from creating recyclable packaging to using natural ingredients.
