The world’s largest luxurious commune opened its doors yesterday and already has a long list of young professionals moving in.
The Collective property company launched its new residence yesterday in Old Oak, in North London. With 550 bedrooms, the building welcomed young professionals who want to live “ a new way of life” according to The Collective.
A room costs £1,000 a month, This includes bills, Wi-Fi and cleaner fees and the tenant will have a 100 square foot private room and bathroom and a kitchen shared with another tenant.
If you choose to have a guest, they will be allowed to stay for a maximum of two weeks before being charged £30 a night.
The accommodation has been compared to luxurious university halls but The Collective sees it as a new scheme to offer graduates an alternative to flat sharing, as many don’t want to live with strangers.
Molly Ashford, 29, a wedding planner assistant in Shoreditch said:” I think it’s a great idea. People with the same interests can meet and there is everything you need around you. But I think it a short-term solution and I wouldn’t spend more than a year there because it wouldn’t feel like a home to me.”
The residence offers a large range of facilities such as a gym, a spa, a restaurant, a bar, a library, a games room and a cinema room.
Joanna Bucur, 30, one of three community managers at the Old Oak, told the MailOnline: “The facilities are amazing. They are all new, you get so much included. All the spaces are yours. We are targeting people who believe in the concept. We have around 20 people and staff – the first people moved in yesterday so last night we had a party. It was a relaxing time.’
A rich Singaporean family privately funded the building and the company is already working on a second site in Stratford, east London.
Simon Reeves, a 35-year-old shop assistant said: “I had seen an advert for this on the tube. I think it is a bit ridiculou. The rooms look tiny and the price is far too high for the size of the room. But the concept is interesting, to regroup people with the same interests together can be a good way of networking.”
Tenants are encouraged to leave their books in the communal library, as the rooms are quite small.
Given London’s housing crisis, The Collective believes it could be the way to attract young professionals back to London.
