‘Pensioners’ Fail to Get Their Spurs

Tottenham has seen their Premier League title aspirations shattered after blowing a two goal lead, drawing 2-2 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night.

Top goal scorer Harry Kane and Son Heung-min sent Tottenham into a 2 goal lead before half time, dominating play and running the Chelsea defence all over the place. But whether it was complacency on the part of Spurs or the will to destroy their London rivals’ title aspiration, Chelsea came out on fire in the second half.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill scored in the 58th minute making Tottenham and Leicester fans nervous. Eden Hazard played his best game manoeuvring his way through the Tottenham defence, eventually breaking their hearts in the 83rd minute.

This draw resulted in  Leicester City winning their first league title with two games remaining, leaving Tottenham to fight for the second place. It was a momentous day for all the teams in the football league, showing that hard work and belief can win you trophies.

While sipping his cappuccino this morning with the thought that Tottenham had blown the title dream, 29-year-old fan Jermaine Tandoh said, “We had the opportunity to win the title but we gave away silly games and now we have nothing.”

Leicester City have defied the logic of today’s football, just surviving relegation last season. They were able to beat four of the top five teams and dominated the league from Christmas until winning the prestigious Premier League title. The remarkability of this achievement brings memories of Derby County’s first title win in 1972, Ipswich Town’s title in 1962 and Nottingham Forest’s  win in 1978.

Giving credit where it is due. Leicester City have done everything they can to win the Premier League title. But is it more remarkable than Nottingham Forest’s or Portsmouth’s league title triumph?

Time will tell.
