Would you rather keep your job or your pride? This is a good question and one that is asked frequently. When we feel proud, we have a dignified sense to what is due to oneself or position.
People gain social status through things they own such as a job position, clothing style the cars they drive etc. It can be said that this boosts ones pride.
However, in today’s tough job market, it seems that more people are taking whatever jobs are available mainly for the income, to be able to pay their bills and provide for their families. According to a recent survey from Hyphen, the recruitment company shows that the majority of people are not satisfied in their jobs or proud of the companies they work for. A quarter of London’s workers are losing pride in their place of work.
Although these are low paid bottom of the spectrum jobs, they still need doing. Despite this, many people may feel they are above picking up rubbish or working in McDonalds. People will even turn jobs down if they believe they are better than the job role offered even if it does lead to better prospects. Pride has been shown to be the obstacle in one’s success.
Michael Casling, 25, a former shift manager at McDonalds says “I worked at McDonalds for 7 years and during the first 3 to 4 years, I was very proud of my role within my job and what I was achieving, but not the brand itself. It wasn’t very warming explaining to people that I was a McDonald’s worker.”
Some people will say you can have both, which is possible, right? Taking pride in your job and working to the best of your abilities should be what your job is about.
George White, 61, a current employee at Interserve cleaning services and former employee at General Motors has said “I am very proud of my job, I don’t feel embarrassed at all to tell people I’m a cleaner. I enjoy cleaning. I don’t need the money, I just took on the job for a bit of extra pocket money and to get me out of the house after I retired from IBC 5 years ago.”
Taking pride in your work could be anything from being on time to knowing where you are on your to do list. All of these things show a good attitude, exactly what your employer is looking for. Take pride in what you do, whatever it is. Being able to hold your head up high will make you feel better about yourself and promise you a better future.
