Street style of Holloway

Holloway Road is home to people from all over the world – and that is reflected in their clothing style. This is one area where you can find people wearing designer clothes, high street bargains, and thrift shop specials.

Valerie Zuikova, a 28-year-old doctor from Moscow, likes to mix high-street items, preferably from Weekday, with timeless designer pieces. She says she has managed to create a chic street style look with her eclectic use of mix-and-match.

“I used to live in Stockholm, Sweden, so my personal style is very influenced by the Scandinavian simplicity and basic colours,” says Zuikova, who now lives permanently in London.

“My favourite designer is Margiela and my favourite brand is the Swedish brand Acne Studios, which is the brand where my pants I am wearing today are from.

“I have paired them with a coat from & Other Stories, an Iron Maiden t-shirt which I can’t remember where I bought, and a black bag from Saint Laurent.”

Tala Roots is a 50-year-old charity shop volunteer from the Middle East. She likes to combine different colours and patterns when putting together her outfits; crushing patterns and blocking colours.

“With my Palestinian background and Middle Eastern origins, I enjoy wearing natural colours, such as brown, green and black. I love recycling clothes, so shopping in charity shops is something that comes naturally,” she says.

“The majority of what I am wearing today is from charity shops. I have worked voluntarily in Mary’s Living and Giving Charity Shop for almost two years now, and often buy second hand clothes here, and then give them my personal touch by redoing them.”

Tala’s not the only one who likes getting recycled clothes at bargain prices. Emilie Lykke, loves to shop second hand. The Norwegian Media and Communication student at London Metropolitan University has previously worked in the vintage shop Blue17, located on Holloway Road.

“I am very inspired by the 70s and 80s, which my personal style is heavily influenced by. Everything I am wearing today is bought either vintage or second hand in different charity shops,” says Emilie, 21.

“I find used items to be more unique, compared to high street ones, although I really love the Danish brand Samsøe Samsøe.”

Originally from Spain, Felipe Mendez likes to stick close to his roots. The 22-year-old retail associate at H&M says his favourite brand is the Spanish brand Balenciaga, although he also loves Burberry. Not surprising considering he now works and lives in London – where charity shopping is a favourite pastime.

Felipe loves fashion and styling and enjoy being updated in the fashion world. He has a interest in creating new content for social media, showing off his outfits and personal style.

“What I love the most about fashion is all the feelings you can express with an outfit. You have the ability to express your whole personality in a couple of garments and accessories,” he says.

“My favourite colour is black and my preferred materials are vinyl and leather. I also love high heeled boots and platform shoes.”
