Usually celebrated every 23rd April, this year this Saturday is St. George’s Day – a day dedicated to the patron saint of this country and a symbol for our nation.
Why do we commemorate a day just for him? Well as the story goes, St. George saved a helpless maiden by slaying a dragon. Born into a Christian home in Cappadocia, he followed his father’s footsteps and became Roman soldier. The emperor at the time ordered the army to oppress Christian people. George refused and was subsequently tortured and killed in Palestine, thus becoming a Christian martyr.
Although George may not exactly be English (and probably never set foot on English soil) and very little is really known about him, we shall fly the red-crossed flag high!

Feast of St. George
With a special Shakespearian theme, the Mayor of London is hosting an event at Trafalgar Square to celebrate our great saint! There will be stalls at a traditional English farmer’s market, live performances as well as a grand banqueting area, along with family entertainment, brass bands and a spot of medieval jousting. St George’s Day at the V&A Museum of Childhood
Come and take part in a day of traditional folk music, stories and dance from the Trad Academy. Enjoy the British sounds of the Becontree Brass band as well as activities for the children. Open to all ages. Visit V&A Museum of Children for more details.

The Last Libations
Invite your tastebuds to embark on an English gin-tasting tour. One will be guided in the history of gins conquered throughout history, as well as a live re-enactment of the St. George slaying the dragon.
