The spring equinox has officially marked the first day of spring for 2023. The changing weather might make it hard to decide what outfit to wear, but if you need some inspiration you’ve come to the right place. Here are some must-haves experts encourage you to wear this spring.

Spring is the best time to tap into your femininity. What better way to do that than blending in with the bloom of flowers everywhere?

“Florals for spring can actually be ground-breaking. It’s a gorgeous time to enjoy wearing colour,” said Kelly Harvey-Welsh, 42, who is a personal stylist.

Florals have never gone out of fashion. Their impact decreased with the rise of graphic tees that incorporated minimalist flower prints as opposed to maximised flowery patches. But the main question is: what type of florals are in for this season?

“This season we’ll see more corsage style 3D effect florals and smudged florals over ditsy prints,” added Kelly.

“Florals are always big in spring,” said Jessica Brunt, 30, owner of Verte London, which is a London-based clothes swapping company. She urges people to take part in clothes swapping events hosted by the company to help provide a more sustainable future.

“Have you not seen the Devil Wears Prada clip?” added Jessica. “Florals? For spring? Ground-breaking,” in the words of Miranda Priestley, played by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (2006).

Denim Overpowered

Denim is the talk of this season and according to Vogue, the trend is here to stay for longer.

“There were a lot of novelty prints on the catwalk this season along with interesting cuts and use of denim fabric,” added Jessica.

Fashion houses of the likes of Alexander McQueen, Chloe and Etro rolled out reimagined denim pieces for Spring-Summer 2023 back in September last year. These included a twist on the Canadian Tuxedo or printed designs that quickly caught the eyes of fashionistas.

“For denim we’ll be trying a relaxed, oversized looser style stepping away from skinnies to try something new,” said Kelly.

“Denim dressed up with a shirt, blazer and trainers is always a chic look,” said Jessica.

Styling-wise, you can never go wrong with too much denim. Burberry‘s SS23 entry for the trend saw a big chunky denim shirt on top of oversized jeans. Opting for a casual look is still in trend too.

Bright Colours

Theses trends are not the only ones popping up on your TikTok FYP. With the weather warming up quickly, there are a lot more styles to choose from. Kelly and Jessica suggested a few other trends to be on the look-out for.

“Hot pink and any kind of green. The bolder the better,” said Kelly.

Considering that Viva Magenta is Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2023, bright colours are definitely another trend to go for. Big red tones touching purples are already dominating clothing racks. These brighter tones are giving minimalism lovers a run for their money.

Colours on the lighter spectrum are making a comeback as people crave to feel closer to nature, especially after the COVID-19 atmosphere that seems to still lurk around.

“Yellow is big this year. Think Canary Yellow. Everyone loves a bold bright hue!” said Jessica.

These trends are not dependent on specific instructions on how to be worn, especially because the way they come back in fashion varies every time. This is also why people are encouraged to reuse clothes, reduce textile waste and recycle or upcycle older garments into new ones.

“I think we’re moving away more and more from ‘trends’ and into ways of reusing materials and clothing from season to season as the industry becomes more conscious about the impact of fashion on the planet,” said Jessica.
