Spring-terior design

Spring has sprung in London this April, and it might be time to clear out the cupboards and spruce up the kitchen. Whether it’s a fresh lick of paint or an entirely new look, here’s all you need to know about interior designing.

After promising to adopt a ‘new year, new me’ resolution on the New Year, it will come as no surprise that plenty of Londoners carry the same attitude about their homes.

Shaun Billings, 22, works as an interior designer for Home Interiors by Anscombs. The kitchen design specialist said that he notices a surge in people wanting a new kitchen in the spring: “Because designing is expensive and a process to organise, a lot of people wait until after the Christmas rush when everything calms down again,” he said.

Billings also believes that there are popular trends in designing, including colours and styles. He said that “a lot of greys are common these days and wood grain colours too. White is still popular as well.”

Local resident of Holloway Road, Ashleigh Simmons, 36, dental nurse, said that she “liked a freshly decorated room… it makes it more exciting putting all your belongings back in”.

Another local London resident, Graham Webster, 41, construction worker, said that he feels more pressure for work in the spring. “I get it from all angles. My work load increases because people tend to start projects in spring, and my wife is always nagging me to do the hall, stairs and landing.”

If you are planning to do some DIY at home, interior designer Shaun Billings recommends concentrating on some important key areas. He said: “The most important thing about designing a room is symmetry… I think about how the customer uses the space to work out the basics, and then I start the design.”

However, Billings says that he comes up with his best designs when he is being most creative, so grab a sketch pad and pencil, and see what you can come up with this Spring!

Here are some of the top renovation projects to tackle this Spring:

1 Repaint the house – inside and/or outside – A coat of paint will do wonders for your home, it might even knock a few years off of it!

2 Replace worn carpeting – A  nice fluffy carpet will greet your feet in the morning when you get out of bed.

3 Repair fencing panels – You probably haven’t been out in the garden lately, but when the sun does show its face you won’t be wanting to look at depressed fence that fell down in the storm months ago.

4 Clean the windows! – Sounds obvious, but it gets forgotten more commonly than most would like to admit.

5  Clear out the garage – You’ve been saying you’ll do it ‘in the new year’ ever since you moved in 10 years ago … give it a go this Spring!
