It’s no secret that we all want clear and radiant skin all year round. But summer is the time when it really matters, because wearing makeup and covering up imperfections does more damage than good.

The reality is that the hot weather, and the humidity it usually comes with in England, can result in clogged pores, sunburn and dark spots – things everyone would rather avoid.

Molly Newman, 27, who works in KIKO Italy, said: “I worked in skincare for over eight years now, and in a hot country too. People need to stay educated on these things because if you don’t care for your skin it will get much worse in the future.”

These summer skincare tips will ensure that your skin stays happy and hydrated.

Better SPF

Sunscreen can be very tricky, especially how some can result in your skin being very oily. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t a way around it, as Newman said: “Yes, you should reapply every two hours like they say, but it comes in so many shapes and forms, now that you can even do a full face makeup and have a powder SPF, definitely better than nothing.”

Ideally, you should double up on the amount you use during winter. But cream sunscreen tends to add a lot of moisture, which during the summer time is not ideal – look for alternatives which won’t clog up your skin.

Lighter Moisturiser

If your moisturiser consistency is thick and you can feel it on your skin hours later – it is not a good thing, although many would think otherwise. During summer you should switch up your rich moisturiser for something much lighter.

Nikki Rye, 20, who works at Boots as a skincare specialist said: “In hot weather you sweat so much already, why would you want to put extra liquid on your face and clog up your pores, that’s just going to result in more breakouts?”

This summer you should switch your regular moisturiser to a hyaluronic acid-based one; they are great at maintaining hydration without making your face feel sticky or heavy.

Switch up your cleanser

During the fall and winter season, you might want to go for something less exfoliating, whereas in the summer exfoliation is just what you need.

Once the weather gets hotter, and if your skin type allows you to – use exfoliating cleansers at all times. Sweat leads to toxins which build up in your skin and stop your skin from breathing. Cleansers which automatically exfoliate your skin make sure that all the dirt and dead skin don’t stay for longer than they are supposed to.

Molly Newman said: “The best thing you can do for yourself during these heat waves is go home and exfoliate your skin; otherwise you can only dream about having smooth skin the next morning if it’s not being washed properly.”
