Since joining the royal family, Meghan Markle has drawn style inspiration from Diana, Princess of Wales. It is true that Meghan is aware that every picture and every moment that she will spend in public will be a part of history, so she takes good care of her appearance and style.

Meghan styles herself for events and sometimes, just like Diana, her pieces of choice have a hidden meaning. She avoids following trendy items and flashy looks that are must for the season. Instead, she prefers to wear timeless and classic pieces, but she also follows colour combinations and pattern that Diana wore, which have stood the test of time.

In her recent tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan appeared confident and calm, ready to tell her truth and ready to face the consequences. Her outfit mirrored her energy and calmness. She chose to wear a simple Armani wrap dress worth £3,300.

However, it was not just a simple, black dress as it was decorated with Lotus flowers which are symbols in Hinduism for spiritual enlightenment, new beginnings, growth and rebirth.

Meghan also styled the dress with a diamond bracelet that belonged to Diana, as a symbol that she is following the path of her mother in-law, who also spoke her truth almost 30 years ago during a 1995 BBC interview.

Letting an outfit speak

Diana was also famous for letting her outfit speak for her. In June, 1994 she appeared at a Vanity Fair party wearing an off-shoulder black dress designed by Christina Stambolian. This dress became known as “The Revenge Dress” because the Diana chosen to wear it on the same evening in which a documentary about Prince Charles aired, in which he confessed his love affair with Camilla.

The documentary, however, failed to make the Prince gain back his reputation from the world, after divorcing Diana who became known as the “People’s Princess”.

Kerry Taylor, whose company auctioned many famous dresses worn by Diana told womansmagazine.com in 2013, “While some would have been like ‘I can’t face it this evening,’ Diana went out in that dress looking drop-dead gorgeous. She made a big statement right there.”

It is true that in the case of the royal family, many of the members – especially the women – have traditionally chosen to wear pieces that have a meaning behind of them. They are historical figures and so their clothes.

One of the members of Net-a-porter, who did not want to reveal his name, said: “A royal member will usually use a stylist for a purchase for security reasons.

“Especially when it comes to jewellery, our more exclusive customers tend to buy for sentimental reasons which makes sense.”

However, she clarified that her job is extremely confidential so she cannot know the exact identity of the person who is making the purchase.
