As Christmas approaches, shop windows and cafes along Holloway Road are beginning to fill with festive decorations. Among the fairy lights and tinsel, one question quietly divides residents and students alike: real or artificial Christmas trees?
During a short walk along the street, three people shared their views on how they choose to decorate for the holidays.
Anna, 27, said she always buys a real tree, despite the rising cost. “The smell is what makes it feel like Christmas,” she said. “It’s more expensive, but for me the atmosphere is worth it.”
James, 31, agreed. “A real tree reminds me of Christmas growing up,” he said. “It feels more authentic, even if it drops needles everywhere and costs more each year.”

A more expensive winter
Both said they were aware that real trees have become more expensive this winter, but neither felt ready to give up the tradition.
Students living nearby often make a different choice. Daniel, 22, has used the same artificial tree for four years. “It still looks great,” he said. “There’s no mess, no needles on the floor, and I don’t like the idea of cutting down a tree every year. Artificial trees are cheaper in the long run and honestly look more festive.”
Local businesses reflect this divide. One café on the street has placed a real tree near its entrance, with staff saying customers often comment on the smell as they walk in. Meanwhile, a neighbouring shop displays an artificial tree decorated with reused ornaments, describing it as a more practical and sustainable option.
Changing traditions
The contrast highlights how Christmas traditions are changing. While some residents continue to prioritise nostalgia and atmosphere, others particularly students are choosing convenience, cost, and environmental concerns.
On Holloway Road, the debate between real and artificial trees is less about decoration and more about how people balance tradition with modern realities.

Real or fake? Opinions are divided…
Real trees
- These trees provide a natural atmosphere and can fill your house with a lovely pine scent.
- They drop needles and can make the house a mess.
- Some companies allow you to bring your tree back to them for replanting – they come in a special pot.
Artificial trees
- They look perfect – at least some of them do – and the shape is always what you’d expect.
- You can have the same tree year after year to continue with a Christmas tradition, but decorate it differently.
- Artificial trees are better for the environment – although some say plastic trees aren’t. But if you have the same tree for many years, you are helping save the planet.
