No to Papa John’s Pizza in Caledonian Road

Islington Council has refused to let a major US brand takeaway shop open up in Caledonian Road, North London. Planning inspectors rejected the American pizza chain’s application to set up shop and expand their franchise on 344 Caledonian Road.

The council were adamant that the pizza place would only add to the already takeaway filled Caledonian Road, which is bursting with restaurants, cafes and chicken shops. The council weren’t the only ones who felt strongly about this; more than 30 residents protested against the opening, arguing that the restaurants risk taking the attention away from the area’s retail shops.

“The concentration of restaurants is already detracting from the retail character of this immediate area and this addition would only further consolidate such uses,” Inspector Peter Eggleston told the Islington Tribune.

The US pizza giant was set to occupy an empty building currently owned by an estate agent. Papa John’s tried to appeal but the Department for Communities and Local Government supported the council’s decision.
