People in Tottenham are taking in the news that White Hart Lane overground station may be getting a new name.
It’s reported that the station is to be called ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ following talks between Transport for London and the football club – which has just opened its new stadium nearby.
Agreement is said to be close.
The station covers Overground services and is the closest station to the newly refurbished Tottenham Hotspur football stadium.
Speaking to the Guardian newspaper, Patrick Doig, financial director at TfL, said: “We are pursuing a long-term partnership with the team which means we may potentially change the name of the station, however the decisions are still ongoing.”
Re-naming the station after Spurs’ stadium will cost the team an estimate of £11.7 million, according to TfL, and they will be added to the list of local stations owning a football-based name – including North London rivals Arsenal.
According to the Guardian, a spokeswoman for the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has backed the plan.
Tottenham man Kabir Bhogal said: “Although I’m not a Spurs fan and I support Manchester United, I think the station re-name would be a good thing to bring everything together.”
The partnership between the team and station is not yet determined but will bring unity to the community of Tottenham.
