Maskne: what are you hiding underneath your mask?

by Eleonora Zorzenone

Wearing masks to protect yourself and others is an unquestionable social responsibility, but more and more people are now suffering from maskne (or mask acne); a condition that causes pimples, irritation, redness and bumpiness.

What is the reason behind maskne and what is the medical explanation for it? Acne Mechanica is the medical terminology for this condition and it is caused by the mask pressuring, rubbing and squeezing against the skin.

It can also occur when our breath creates a warm and moist environment underneath the mask. The humidity creates the perfect ground for bacteria to multiply.

It is definitely not a pleasant issue to be dealing with but there are numerous precautions we can take to avoid it. If we wear reusable masks, it is important to wash them every day and try to carry with us an extra mask that we can switch out when it gets too moist.

The fabric is also very important. Some masks are full of chemicals and result rougher on the skin. Materials like cotton, spandex or polyester are recommended as they are gentler on the skin and cause less irritation.

Beauty companies have already accepted the challenge and are trying to create the best product that can help people solve this newborn issue.

The famous Korean skincare brand Dr. Jart is offering their premium Wonder Cicapier line that promises miracles for the skin.

The brand Dr. Barbara Sturm decided to create a skincare set called ‘Maskne Set’ to help avoid and soothe the appearance of redness, irritation and acne. The kit also includes a matching cotton mask because you can never have too many masks these days.

Murad is another brand who is being very engaged in the fight against ‘maskne’. The Murad Clarifying Mask is becoming very popular online. British YouTubers like Amelia Liana and Victoria McGrath (In the Frow) love the product and share online many tips and tricks on how to use it. It is definitely a must try.
