John Edward Ryan, 53, of Thackeray Avenue, N17, pleaded guilty today to assaulting his partner on the 24th March 2019 at their home in the London Borough of Haringey.
Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court heard today that Mr Ryan and his partner had had an on-and-off relationship for a number of years. The assault in question arose after an argument that took place after Mr Ryan’s partner had spent a day in the presence of her ex-partner, the court heard.
The Metropolitan Police were called to the couple’s home in Tottenham, and revealed that it wasn’t the first time that they had been called to intervene in the couple’s domestic dispute. The prosecution told Judge Newton that the pair were known to often fight, including previous altercations where she would attack him. He added that there had been 19 phone calls in total to the police during prior incidents.
When interviewed at Wood Green police station, Ryan admitted to slapping his partner once across the face and accepted his offence. He was said to be drunk during the altercation and admitted to having previous alcohol problems, which he was attempting to sort out at a local substance abuse help group. “I put my hands up to what I did,” he confessed.
The case did not require medical attention therefore the Judge placed the case under ‘Lower Category 2’, also taking into consideration that the defendant had previous violent convictions in the last decade. The victim had also been drinking but said she wasn’t drunk.

Due to the case being put under the ‘medium domestic abuse’ category, the court issued Mr. Ryan with a fine of £85 and a charge of using court time.
