A man appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court today after allegedly breaching restraining order requirements.

Zeynel Sanli, 61, pleaded not guilty after he was accused of sending letters to the victim of his previous conviction for rape, for which he is currently serving 10 years in prison.

A total of five letters, all written in Turkish, were reportedly sent between 27th September 2017 and 2nd January 2018 without reasonable excuse, after he was prohibited from contacting the complainant both directly and indirectly.

There were no statements made by the complainant, there were only letters in Turkish and English and a copy of the notice of a restraining order to the victim, the court heard.

Sanli’s solicitor argued that the letters did not contain anything dangerous or threatening, but were emotional.

His next court appearance will be 12th June 2018, where he will be back at the Magistrates’ Court to face trial.
