We asked students for their online dating experiences

With Valentine’s Day just over the misty horizon, we took a dive into the world of online dating.
Over 27% of British women now say they prefer online dating as opposed to old-school methods, according to British online card retailer, Scribbler.
Last year, a study by The Knot, an online agency specialising in wedding planning, found that Tinder was responsible for bringing together a quarter of all engaged and newly married couples who meet online.
With this in mind, we asked students here at London Met University to share their dating app tales.
Apps not always positive
For Tania Walker, 40, her experience with the dating app was not particularly positive: “I found everyone on Tinder very cuckoo, like they have problems. Being a psychology student, no, no Tinder, no Badoo,” she explains.
“Hinge was alright, but Bumble, I felt, was more, like, decent,” she adds.
Last year, Mary Ann Liebert, a global media organization, published a report that almost two-thirds of Tinder users were already either “married or ‘in a relationship’,” which may further dissuade those seeking a committed relationship from using the platform.
When asked for her experience with dating apps, Amanda, another student, said; “It varies. I think there’s some dating apps are really good, and you give good results from them and others. You just think that it’s just not worth your while, just a waste of time.”
“I’ve been on a few and I had good experiences and I had bad experiences,” she continued.
“I think you have to be very careful as well because some people do tend to lie.”
“When you speak to them [other users], you’re thinking, ‘but you said you’re this age… why are you lying?’, and that was a bit of a turn off for me.”

Dating can be challenging
For Abdul Ramirez, 26, online dating proved to be quite a challenge; “from my perspective, I never succeed, or even met anyone from an app. I even got scammed once.”
“Another one was my ex-girlfriend pretending to be a [different] woman, so that was another thing,” he added.
