A University student who is enrolled on a Media and Communications Degree course at the London Metropolitan University said he had to cut classes to pursue his dreams of becoming a  rapper in Grime Music.

“I’ve always had a love for Grime music,” says Jordan Walters, 19, who grew up on the Broad Water Farm estate in Tottenham. It was once one of London’s most dangerous council estates.

Jordan uses Social Media platforms such as YouTube to get his music out to listeners by uploading freestyles to his channel “Lil Spooks”. Through the sharing site he gained thousands of followers who shared his music on.

“I’ve always made music in my bedroom, possibly since the age of 11 but I’ve only taken it seriously as of recently, by only starting to go to the studio since 2018,” he says, adding that he plans on finishing his degree if his work doesn’t get in the way.

“But I didn’t release any music, it was more of being experimental with the various sounds and genres that would best suit me. So, in my eyes, I have only been an artist since late 2019 as that’s when I released my first official single, ‘Intent’ in late September,” he says.

Jordan calls himself a “multi-genre” artist, “even after only releasing two tracks. A cross over between Drill, Afro-Swing and Trap Wave, a new and fresh sound of melodies for the UK urban music scene.”

His love for music was shaped by his late brother, who worked with various artists such as Tim Westwood, Naughty Boy and Emile Sandé before he was killed in 2013. It was also inspired by his father, who is of Jamaican descent. The two would often play cultured Reggae loud so that the whole neighbourhood could hear, Jordan says.

“My mother, of Zambian descent, is a Christian so she adopted this religion onto her children so like many other Afro-Caribbean children in the UK, I grew up in Church so Gospel in a sense opened my Horizon to the many different genres growing up.”

Walters was contacted by a promotional events company through Instagram and was invited by them to perform at Brixton Jamm, alongside other unsigned Artists. Here he will be able to gain more exposure in light of building his career further, whilst taking a small percentage of the ticket sales which can be purchased for £10.

He said he is looking forward to performing and that he has always preferred being on stage to studying. Previously he worked as an actor, and he said his on-stage experience helped him lose a stammer, which disappears when he raps or freestyles. Performing also helps him become another person, he says, an escape which allows him to explore and delve into different depths.

“I’ve already collaborated with three upcoming artists but all of the songs haven’t been released yet,” he says.
