Rakhia Ismail was elected Labour councillor for Holloway ward following the by-election on 3 May.

The 46-year-old mother of four, who works for a women’s charity in Manor Park, dealt a big blow to the Conservatives by taking 57 per cent of the vote to win the Holloway by-election.
Somalian Rakhia Ismail campaigned on a platform of tackling youth unemployment and homelessness. London Somalian Youth Forum committee chairman, Fahad Mohamad, said: “Rakhia Ismail was working really hard on education and job opportunities in Holloway. We are celebrating her success. Well done, Rakhia.”
The numbers of votes divided for the four candidates contesting the seat are as follows:
Rakhia Ismail, Labour Party – 2,352
Jonathan Edwards, Conservative Party – 671
Claire Poyner, Green Party – 613
David John Kelly, Liberal Democrats – 490
Rakhia Ismail has lived in Islington for 19 years and raised her four children in Holloway. Ms Ismail said on the Islington Labour website “I am proud to have lived in Islington for 19 years and raised my four children here with my husband. I love Islington and would be honoured to be elected to the Council”
Paul Smith is a Labour Party Councillor, working as an Executive Member of the Environment in Islington claimed that he was working really close with Rakhia Ismail while in this election times.
Labour Party Councillor for Islington, Paul Smith, said that the Labour Party in Islington has got 45 percent of the votes and 35 seats in Parliament. Looking at the last 15 years of elections in Islington, this is a significant change for Labour group.
He added, “We are a party winning back people’s trust. Rakhia Ismail won the election this year with a final tally of 2,352 votes, around 45% of overall votes.”
