“His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle”, said the official document published by Clarence House in November, 2017.
Since then, it’s been royal wedding fever.
Under the “Succession to the Crown Act 2013” the prince, as the fifth in the line to the throne, had to ask his grandmother, the Queen, for permission to marry Ms. Markle. The statement was published on the 14th of March and Her Majesty gave formal consent. On May 19th, Rachel Meghan Markle will marry Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales.
The relationship between Britain’s most popular bachelor and an American actress shocked the country – but there is no doubt that their wedding ceremony will be most important social event of the year.
Islington locals are also looking forward to the wedding. ““I’m so excited about the royal wedding. I remember watching William and Kate’s ceremony couple years ago and I can’t wait to see Prince Harry getting married to Meghan,” said Kimberly Dawn, 29, a retail worker.
“I’ve seen a couple episodes of Suits and she’s so beautiful. Seeing the wedding dress is definitely the moment that I’m waiting for.”
Where will see view the Big Day? “I’ll probably watch it with my friend at home – she’s always been a big fan of Prince Harry.”
What we know so far
The wedding ceremony will take place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor and will be followed by two wedding receptions: one in the afternoon at St. George’s Hall hosted by the Queen, and the second in the evening, hosted by Prince Charles.
The couple has chosen Claire Ptak and her Hackney-based bakery, Violet Cakes, to design their wedding cake. The famous fashion photographer and author of the couple’s engagement portrait, Alex Lubomirski, was picked to be the official wedding photographer.
Kensington Palace has also reported that Philippa Craddock will take care of the flowers in the chapel and at the receptions. Arrangements of the flowers will most likely include peonies, as Meghan has previously shared many photos of these flowers on her social media accounts.
Harry’s girl
Meghan Markle, born on the 4th of August, 1981 in Los Angeles, California has probably broken all the possible rules and stereotypes. She is the first mixed-race Catholic divorcee to become a royal. At 36, Meghan is also the oldest bride to marry a member of the British royal family.
Meghan is not the first American actress to marry a prince, however. In 1956, Grace Kelly, Oscar-winning actress born in Philadelphia, married Prince Rainier III of Monaco. “America’s second ‘princess’: Why Meghan Markle is a modern Grace Kelly,” commented CNN.
Royal wedding in Islington
Islington is ready to celebrate the royal wedding. The Old Queen’s Head pub is currently promoting a very special event on its web site. “You are cordially invited to watch the live screening of the marriage of Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales and Meghan Markle. Expect primms, bucks fizz, g&ts & breakfast burgers from lucky chip. We’re super hyped to see who’s wearing what and who’s on the guest list.”
In November last year, not long before the engagement news broke, a north London-based graffiti artist created a painting of Meghan dressed in an American flag with a tiara and two Queen’s Guards on a wall in Islington, near Holloway Road. “Harry’s Girl” is written above the painting of the actress.
