Islington residents have criticised officials for hiking parking permit prices at a time when people are already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.
Islington Council raised the cost for residents to park their cars on the borough’s streets in February, but many of those who must pay the higher cost claim the burden is already stretching their wallets.
Memet Hayem, 45, who works as a parking enforcement officer in Islington council, said: ‘’I am checking the area if someone is parking illegally, or their permit is expired because there is a time limit before I can issue a ticket.”
The price of parking permits has almost tripled in the borough in the last 10 years: it went from £232 in 2013 to a maximum price of £860 this year.
And even some of the parking enforcement officers can’t keep up with the numbers. “Here in Islington, I’m not too sure about the [parking permit] rates, but I do issue citations in this area for £60 to defaulters,” said Hayem.
Tom Brounder, 38, a local resident said: “I have a green car and pay £22 a year for my parking permit; therefore, the price increases have no effect on me. However, people that are not using eco-friendly cars spend more.’’

According to Select Car Leasing, Islington represents the most expensive parking permit in the UK. Due to the high cost of parking, customers may shorten their stays or simply spend less money in restaurants and shops, which can hurt local business in Islington.
At a time when people are struggling with growing living expenses, rising energy costs, and inflation, government should be searching for methods to reduce citizens’ suffering rather than causing more of it.
