We are living in an age where all kinds of technology are fighting to get a foot in the door. Because of this, film photography is believed to be dead. It’s as if still photos are almost a sweet memory from the past.
Digital shooting offers a lot of advantages, such as better resolution, lighter cameras and built-in filters. In addition, it allows photographers to print only the pictures they like the most, which is as a long-term solution is cheaper.
Despite that, more and more people are coming back to shooting with film cameras, which means that we are witnessing a resurrection of film photography.
“In the last decade film photography has been making a huge comeback, especially between students and young people, but also professionals,” said Max Bean, 23, sales assistant at Nicholas Cameras in Mornington Crescent.
Max has been working in the shop for over a year now and he sells a lot of film cameras every month, almost as many as digital cameras. “People are really interested and there is a great demand of it, and that’s also because they are cheaper in price than digital,” added Bean.
Film cameras require more creativity because you need to think about each shot before taking it, and while developing your pictures in the darkroom you can learn and understand editing techniques easily accessible on software such as Photoshop. “Students buy film cameras the most because they are approaching the industry and they need to learn as much stuff as they can,” said Bean.
The film cameras Nicholas Cameras sells the most of are the Canon A-E1 and the Canon A-1, but also every kind of Pentax. They only sell Kodak colour film, but they have also a Kodak box-brownie for the price of £15.
