Hyde Park Heatwave

Words and photos by Sara Scheeres

This summer was one of the hottest the UK has ever experienced.

Miami born and Mediterranean bred, I was no stranger to this kind of heat, but the city made it absolutely stifling.

I ventured desperately to Hyde Park, hoping to swim, but alas, the lido was closed from the blooming algae birthed from the weather conditions.

Thus I escaped through my camera; perhaps alone in my photographing, but together in this heatwave with the many at the park, connecting with them through the lens of my iPhone.

Blazing temperatures unbearable to Brits
The weather that my Mediterranean blood loves
Becomes as bad without the water to rely on

I am voyeuristic, shamelessly looking in at these people
Observing and not claiming to be a part of it
I think, how can you see me as a photographer, reflected?
Other than the surface, that I am looking in and at..?

Scratch it, go deeper, there must be something there…
What I find is loneliness
Connection difused by the heat. Even in the pool of blue boats
Groups are separated like my dream of experiential bubbles

But who’s to say this loneliness isn’t alone-ness?
When you look closer, there is satisfaction in each of these images and their solitude

A man enjoys sudoku success
Though those two couples look cold… and I can’t find joy in that
By the stack, the centerpiece chair flows free in the wind
While the two in the back keep the conversation going after the humans have gone
The man covers his face from the sunshine, though his fingers are poised and relaxed
The woman, underexposed and on her own, is in conversation with some lingering ducks
And though her hat hides any expression of the head and turned face,
Her feet propped up prove her comfort and playfulness
The spread of boats in and of itself holds a magnificence of togetherness
And the toes tickle the water mid-kick
