This week marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. The famous playwright continues to have a tremendous global influence, many centuries later.
In memory of his death, London will be one of many cities hosting Shakespeare-inspired events for all age groups.
Shakespeare’s Globe
Shakespeare’s Globe, or the Globe, is a “unique international resource dedicated to the exploration of Shakespeare’s work and the playhouse for which he wrote, through the connected means of performance and education”, as quoted on the website. It predicts heavy footfall as this week they host various exhibitions, theatre shows and workshops.
They will also be hosting and organizing workshops directed at schools to educate and entertain. The number of visitors attending the exhibition of the great bard’s life is expected to be higher this year than any other year. This week the Globe will be showing performances such as Pericles and The Winter’s Tale, including a remixed comedy sketch featuring actor and comedian Lenny Henry.
According to Globe communications manager Danielle Philips: “We are definitely expecting busier footfall than usual…this time of year is always busy.”
Shakespeare Lives
BBC IPlayer has also announced how it will part take in the anniversary, as the Globe and the Royal Opera House contribute to the Shakespeare Lives portal. For the first time, the channel will also host live content on Saturday, marking the actual date of Shakespeare’s death.
Director-General of BBC, Lord Hall spoke to the BBC saying: “This weekend we’re experimenting live with digital formats like never before. For the first time, the BBC will be showcasing the great talent we have in our leading cultural institutions on BBC iPlayer.”
The British Library
Shakespeare in Ten Acts will feature at the British Library, a unique exhibition showcasing ten performances dedicated to the bard. The exhibition will also feature the only surviving script of play hand-written by the great man himself.
