Hackney’s Dance Tunnel to Close

By Philippa Branton and Lindsey Henderson

One of East London’s most popular clubs known as Dance Tunnel, located beneath Voodoo Rays in the borough of Hackney, is being forced to close in August. This is due to licensing regulations making the running of the club financially unstable.

“Sadly the licensing climate in Hackney has made it impossible for us to get the hours we need to make Dance Tunnel sustainable in the long term,” venue organisers said in a statement on Facebook.

The basement club has become one of East London’s most well-loved clubs since its opening in 2012. The club earned its reputation from its powerful sound system and lighting, as well as its unmissable lineups and unpretentious crowds.

“The decision is the latest blow to the city’s nightlife as the past two years have seen several club’s including Madame Jojo’s, Plan B and Plastic People close for various different reasons,” Billy Black wrote in Crack Magazine.

Thanks for the memories…

The club showed gratitude on their Facebook page and said: “Thanks to all the artists, DJs, promoters and family members who have shared their favourite music and moments with us over the last three-and-a-bit years.”

Rob Syme, a 26-year-old property service worker said, “Absolutely devastating news. One of the best clubs in London, friendly vibes, always bringing through the lesser-known DJs and importantly tickets were never more than a tenner. A place where the door staff actually treat you with respect, which is a rare thing these days.”

A petition was started to save Dance Tunnel, with big artists such as Four Tet and Disclosure paying tribute. Despite the petition reaching over 2,400 signatures, the club owners wrote on Facebook, “It hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but for us Dance Tunnel’s future lies elsewhere. We would like to offer our heartfelt and sincere thanks to everyone who has been in touch to offer support.”

A fond farewell

Before the club is due to close, the artists Evan Baggs and Ma Dahu & Kitt are playing this Friday, Jane Fitz & Jason Wynters Saturday and Various Anonymous on Sunday. So as the end draws near, grab your tickets, your best dancing shoes and say a fond farewell to this special little tunnel, it will be a night to remember and a chance to see exactly what this borough will be missing.
