So you might be stroking your cat’s fur or scratching your dog’s ear as you are reading this article, but did you know that the new craze about what to keep as a pet no longer falls into a ‘cute and cuddly’ category, no, now the moment you walk into a pet store you will be offered to step into the ‘creepy crawly’ and the ‘cold blooded’ section.
Exotic animals such as tarantulas, lizards, snakes and poisonous frogs are becoming increasingly popular household pets. These are seemingly becoming most trendy amongst the younger age group.
Sales assistant, Danny Coletti, at Kings Aquatics and Reptile World located in Camden said: “Yes well our shop specialises in these creatures only. I have worked here for just over two years and increasingly we are seeing more and more customers wanting an exotic pet. The most popular right now are the pink toe tarantulas and Amazon milk frogs.”
“I have a python, a tarantula and two baby lizards myself. I love them, but my family who I still live with, hates them, most people are scared of them or disgusted by them, while I think that they are more adorable than puppies,” he added.
To take care of such pets requires more research and preparation than with usual house pets such as dogs and cats. Many of these animals need a customised environment to live in. A lot of the time the owners have to measure the temperature changes in the room that the pets are held. Usually specialist shops like Kings Aquatics and Reptile World are able to provide the inexperienced owners with enough information to kick things off, they also sell appropriate food for most exotic species.
Damian Daniels, 17, owns a couple of exotic species and prefers them to your standard canine companion.
“I love animals, but I guess not the ordinary ones, I have a tarantula, three rats, an Amazon lizard and a few different species spiders. My first ever pet was a dog, I suppose people think that you can’t bond with the kind of pets that I have, that you can only keep a personal bond with pet like dogs or cats. But because I had a dog I can compare the two kinds and can honestly say that you can talk to a tarantula equally as much as to your dog, plus actually taking care of exotic pets is a lot more fun.”
