Fashion plays a significant role in shaping and expressing personal identity, encompassing aspects such as gender expression, belonging to cultures and subcultures, facilitating self-discovery, and empowerment.

Fashion provides a means for individuals to express their gender identity and challenge traditional gender norms. This can involve wearing clothing traditionally associated with a different gender, or embracing gender-neutral or non-binary fashion styles.

The rise of gender-fluid fashion brands such as, WILDFANG, Ijji and runway shows featuring models of diverse gender identities reflects a growing acceptance of fluidity in gender expression within the fashion industry.

Sense of belonging

Fashion is also used by many nations to express tradition and cultural pride. For example, in Norway, women wear a Bunad, or a beloved traditional Norwegian dress made out of wool and decorated in embroidery, for special occasions. The Bunad represents cultural heritage, providing a sense of pride and connection to their ancestors.

Fashion can also serve as a tool for self-discovery and self-expression, allowing individuals to experiment with different styles and personas until they find what resonates most with their authentic selves

It also empowers individuals by allowing them to assert their uniqueness and challenge societal expectations. This empowerment can come from wearing clothing that makes them feel confident and comfortable in their own skin, or from aligning themselves with fashion movements and brands that promote inclusivity, diversity, and self-acceptance.

The body positivity movement is an example of this. Gaining momentum in recent years, the movement is about encouraging people of all shapes and sizes and backgrounds to embrace their bodies and celebrate their beauty through fashion.

Dan Fiorelli, 26, a fashion student from East London, said, “Thank God we are finally living in a time where people are starting to feel like they can dress the way they want without the scrutiny. I definitely do.

“I mean, if you told my 10-year-old self that at 26 I’d finally be confident enough to wear skirts and makeup as a man, I definitely wouldn’t have believed you. Times have changed and hopefully they keep changing for the better.”
