Have you felt tempted to change your hair colour or suddenly found yourself wanting to get rid of all that dead weight on your shoulders? If that’s the case, here are some hair trends experts recommend.

Lived-in blondes

“We see a lot of ‘lived-in blondes’. Think of sun kissed/California blondes. However, this [trend] seems to be stepping away from traditional highlights,” said Cally Borg, 37, creative commercial session stylist from London.

She is a multi-award-winning hairstylist and has her own salon, Cally Salon Hair, in Reigate.

According to Pierre Haddad Hair Management, the lived-in blonde look is obtained through a subtle highlighting method that amplifies your natural colour. Similar shades are combined to your natural tone, without touching up the roots, so it looks like it is your natural hair just grown out and polished. The look lasts up to six months.

Taking into consideration the cost of living crisis, hair care has become a luxury. Going to the salon costs a fortune but the ‘lived-in blonde’ alternative saves up on money because it requires less visits to the salon and can help avoid potential box dye disasters.

If you’re looking to go a few shades brighter than your natural tone, a balayage might be for you.

“Balayage is very in this year. I definitely think that balayage will stay in as it’s not high maintenance. You can do a balayage every 6-8 months unlike highlights,” said Hulya Kupely, 39, hairdresser at N7 Hair&Beauty located on Holloway Road. She has been a hairdresser for 22 years.

Balayage was really popular in 2022, especially with the help of social media platforms. The hashtag #balayage has surpassed 3.8 billion views on TikTok. The sharp icy blonde cuts are the most popular.

Bobs – The Bixie cut

“We are seeing our traditional bobs getting shorter. The French bob is very popular. They are so versatile and never [go out of] date. I love a bob!” said Cally.

“There is also the ‘Bixie’, a variation of a pixie and a bob haircut,” said Cally.

Blending the bob and the pixie ultimately gives you the volume of a short pixie and the playfulness of a bob.

Copper Reds

“We have a new growing trend for coppers. This has become popular over the last few years and [it will be even more popular] especially in 2023,” said Cally.

If you weren’t into the copper hair craze back in September, you might join it this year. The trend caught a lot of traction with the pumpkin spice latte season. December saw the striking coppers turn auburn, keeping the trend alive and tempting more and more people to try it out.

“I have done a lot of copper this year. So red is really in. I’m really tempted in going red too,” said Hulya.

Spring will see these reds become strawberry blondes or coral colours, in tone with the blooming season.

More texture – The ‘Rachel’

“Cut wise… we see a lot of long wavey hair since the balayage trend hit a few years back. However, more texture is starting to make a comeback,” said Cally.

It has become routine for internet fashionistas to cut their own curtain bangs in order to add more texture to their hair. For this reason, the wolf cut and the octopus cut have become popular.

“There is a modern spin on the iconic ‘Rachel’ cut that Jennifer Anniston had in Friends,” said Cally.

The ‘Rachel’ is an iconic blowout look, obtained by adding volume to face framing layers. Combined with a grown out wolf cut, the hairstyle becomes more classy and versatile, adapted to modern times.
