Fancy a 5k but not your average Joe? Get fit and have fun by participating in east London’s Where’s Wally and north London’s Tough Mudder fun runs. Whether you’re looking for an event for the kids or want to test your teamwork on a muddy obstacle course, one of these runs is right for you.

Ever wonder where Wally went? Catch a sea of them at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday, 15 March 2020. This family-friendly fun run offers 1, 5 and 10k courses so you can bring the whole gang.

If you don’t own Wally’s classic stripes, white hat and thick glasses, no worries! A registration and entry fee of just £14 for kids and £27 for adults will earn you a Where’s Wally costume, collectible medal, goody bag and more freebies.

This run benefits the National Literacy Trust and, according to the event’s page, “every penny raised from the [Where’s Wally fun run] will help give disadvantaged children in the UK the literacy skills they need to succeed”.

The event will last from 8:45am to 2pm and offers prizes for course winners, entertainment, and face painting for the little ones!

Tough Mudder

Looking for a fun run with a bit more grit? The Finsbury Park Tough Mudder will definitely dirty your trainers. Located in north London’s Haringey borough, this run lasts two action-packed days—17 and 18 April 2020.

5k and 10k courses are available, and registration ends on race day. A bit more pricey, the Finsbury Park Tough Mudder costs between £45 and £65 (depending on course length), with price rises the longer you wait to register.

A bit more involved than east London’s Where’s Wally run, the Finsbury Park Tough Mudder includes intense obstacles designed to test mind and body.

Sarah Power, Senior Marketing Associate at Tough Mudder International, explains some of the course: “From squelching through pits of mud to working with a team to clamber up a slippery pyramid and running through electric wires” – this run has it all.

Is the run only for seasoned athletes? Not at all, said Power. “We see participants of all shapes and sizes and from a range of fitness backgrounds. [Tough Mudder] is about overcoming a challenge and working with a team rather than winning.”

You can register with a team or on your own, but Power does note that obstacles are built to be overcome in groups. She explained that solo runners often make friends on the course and as backup, there is a Solo group designed to bring these runners together before the event.
