2020 has been a challenge for everyone. With people losing their loved ones and their jobs, and many being forced to give up their usual lifestyles, the news of a vaccine that could spell and end to the pandemic came as a relief.

At least for some.

As many things that are completely new and largely untested, the different reactions to the Pfizer Inc. -BioNTech SE Covid-19 vaccine, which has just started being rolled out, are expected – if not predictable

Dhrushma Patel, 21, retail assistant at Iceland, believes the vaccine is good. “But if someone has an allergic reaction, they wouldn’t know what might happen,” he said.

The vaccine was first administered on December 8th. Since then, two people have suffered allergic reactions to it, although both have recovered.

Medical staff are now insisting that people are monitored for at least 15 minutes after getting the vaccine, and some people who have suffered serious anaphylactic reactions to medications or food in the past are being told not to have it.

But fear of allergies are not the only reason some people are wary of the vaccine against Covid-19, which has killed more than 64,000 people in the UK alone.

Given the short time the vaccine took to develop, it’s natural that people are reluctant to get vaccinated.

Awa Kone Le Gal, a 22-year-old student at Morley College, told Holloway Express: “I think that the vaccine is a con and something that isn’t strong enough yet to cure the virus. I don’t trust it at all.”

Getting the jab may become a requirement for some to be able to continue with their jobs in a normal manner.  “As a person with little medical knowledge, I was initially very concerned about the approach to immunisation. The situation from the beginning of the pandemic repeats here, when the media was responsible for the creation of most of the negative news,” said Edyta Maleszewska, 44, a lawyer from Warsaw.

“My job requires that I am always ready to meet my clients. I think that if possible I will be one of the first people in line.”
