Black History is celebrated throughout the whole of October in the UK. The purpose of this month is to commemorate Black heritage, culture, and history.

The annual observance has reached its 36-year milestone of recognising the achievements of Black culture and communities.

The London Borough of Islington, well known for its diversity and rich history, has prepared more than 10 events to commemorate this significant month, including a fire station open day, an Afro fitness class inspired by African dance styles, and a Black history walk to discover contributions made to Islington’s cultural, social, and political landscape.

Community coming together

Islington local Adeola Ojo, 31, said: “It’s great; Islington has lots of African and Caribbean people, and it’s nice to see us all come together, . . . showing it’s not just about the past but the present and future as well.”

Online, many events can be found catering to all ages. However, some locals have expressed a lack of visibility, awareness, and promotion for the events and activities taking place for Black History Month in the borough.

Local resident Nathan Adebayo, 42, said: “Islington has been my home for many, many years. In my opinion, I’d say there is an absence every year for proper organisation, and most people don’t know about any events going on this month.”

This highlights the importance of councils actively engaging, preparing, and organising activities and events to reach and invite everyone in the community.
