The coronavirus doesn’t cause tummy trouble, but nonetheless the pandemic may make it harder to wipe your bum.
Supermarkets in Holloway Road such as Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s had shelves completely empty of both toilet paper and hand sanitising gel, as fears grow over the spread of coronavirus.
Juice books and other staple items were also gone, or in short supply. In the Waitrose branch next to Nags’ Head market, a woman was seen stocking up on tomato sauce and pasta.
Yesterday the government said there was “no need” for coronavirus stockpiling, as worried shoppers cleared shelves.
Sudiq Davies 27, a Sainsburys employee, said that all of loo rolls and hand sanitizer gels were sold out in their branch on Holloway Road, next to London Metropolitan University.
“I believe it’s because the public are afraid that we might be in quarantine like in Italy,” he said.
He added that public don’t seem to care how expensive toilet paper price is – 10 % of the public will still buy it. The government has said it might put fines in place for businesses that are trying to capitalise on the virus.
Styet Aslan, 38, an employee in Lycamobile, said: “I believe that 60 % of public are afraid, and that 40 % are stocking paper toilet for the own usage.
“People are selfish and don’t mind stocking up to 20 boxes of toilet paper. I’m afraid this just the beginning.”
He added that the virus is “causing a moral panic which is making people afraid”.
